What Is Ping and Why Does It Matter?

Ping measures the round-trip time for data to travel from your device to a server and back. In gaming, lower ping means your actions register faster on the game server. High ping causes lag, rubber-banding, and missed inputs.

Your ping is affected by three main factors: physical distance to the server, your connection type, and the number of network hops between you and the server.

Why is fiber better for gaming?

Fiber optic connections have the lowest latency overhead (about 2ms) because signals travel as light through glass. Fiber also has symmetrical upload/download speeds and minimal jitter, making it the best connection type for gaming.

How does distance affect ping?

Data cannot travel faster than the speed of light. In fiber optic cables, signals travel at about 200,000 km/s. This means every 1,000 km of distance adds about 5ms of one-way latency (10ms round trip). Physical distance to the server is the single biggest factor in your base ping.
